[cisco-voip] ELM stay negative

Hi guys,

I've hit this on 3 clients now, and I worked pretty hard to get an answer as I wasn't satisfied with original licensing team response.

You should be able to explain the EM and owner id situation.
They should give you the additional licenses (at no cost, and not added to support number)

This is on the premise that your each EM user has 1 physical phone (i.e. in reality you could associate the owner id, but you don't because of the admin overhead) - I assume this is the real intention of the licensing and owner id's. (similar how the adjunct licensing was working before)

It would be a different story if you had a bigger pool of users, i.e. 5000 users sharing 1000 phones, I think in this case your phones are really public space / hotdesk phones.

I still associate user devices, i.e. CSF, jabber tablet, iphone, SNR with owner ID of the user. (this makes complete sense - i.e. they are user based devices)

This may be a temporary fix for now, but I'm hoping they will fix it permanently in the future.
A lot of customers use EM like this - i.e. more of a provisioning tool than actual hot desking.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Louis,

I spoke with a PM and Ryan offline to make sure we are all on the same page about your situation here.

With 1310 devices, even though they are all EM devices, you will need 1310 licenses. A device without a Device Owner is counted the same as a user with one device. So you are short on licenses.

Now, you need to order more licenses or if this was an upgrade and you feel the UCT conversion didn't work appropriately, you need to open a TAC case and work with them to sort it out.

If you used the UCT tool, you may want to open a case anyway. You have those CUWL licenses which are more encompassing licenses, however they will be more expensive to renew when it comes time for that, so just make sure you understand the licenses you are requesting. You really just need to decide if you require CUWL at all and what to fill in your gap with.

The good news is that ELM gives you 90 days to sort this out. Don't let it linger, but this is not a P1 at the moment.

1310 x 794x and 796x phones
1608 end users, but some are there just to be able to search them in corporate directory
1475 UDP's

Louis,

Please be specific here.

1310 what? Phones? Users? Both? I need the exact numbers of each.

You only have enough licenses for 1240 users so I am trying to understand what you ordered.

Chris,

1310, all using EM. No hardcoded phones. My users should be using CUWL standard licensing. Just trying to figure out how I can achieve this.

Ok,

I was thinking for a second maybe this was CSCue14471, but your version is already patched for that.

In your case, we need to know how many phones you have on the system in total and also, how many extension mobility users you have and how many static user/phone users you have.

For the static users, if any, please ensure that the Device Owner is specified on the device page as Ryan mentioned (thanks for the catch, Ryan, my B). If it's all EM, then just send the numbers for now.

Importance: High

EM phones are tagged as public space and consume a license at whatever tier a user with just that phone assigned would consume.

And remember that for licensing purposes you need to set the owner userid on the Device page. Device association from the User page isn't sufficient.

Louis,

This is as I suspected...

740 CUWL + 500 Enhanced = 1240 total

You need 1327 total Enhanced, so it is using the CUWL licenses to make up the difference: 1240 - 1327 = -87.

You need to make sure that the devices are associated to users in the user page and then resynchronize licenses. I suspect you have lots of devices that aren't associated and so CUCM is reporting them as requiring an enhanced license. When multiple devices are associated to a user it will require just a single license rather than two like I think you are seeing.

Try associating a few users to their devices and then resynchronize ELM and see if the number drops. Focus on users that you know to own multiple devices.

Chris,

See below? After doing an Update Usage details on CUCM under License Usage report and then re-syncing ELM, it dropped to -78

Can you send a screenshot of the License Usage page/report.

ELM will use higher level licenses if lower ones are not available.

I.E. if you need 500 Enhanced users but only have 100 Enhanced User Licenses but also have 1,000 CUWL Standard Licenses, ELM will utilize 400 CUWL Standard Licenses to make up the difference. So the negative report may be that you are substituting licenses.

Also, to make sure you are using the proper licenses, you need to be associating phones to users to ensure that CUCM is requesting the proper license type.

Hi all,

I did an upgrade an upgrade recently for a customer for CUCM 8.x to 9.x. The license issued show -87 on the Enhanced (9.x) users on ELM. I deleted numerous un-used phones, User device profiles and end users. I re-synced a few times, removed the CUCM and add it again and even restarted the ELM. The ELM count stay on -87. I have no idea how to reduce this total. Can anyone point me in a direction here what I could do?
