I think the H/W is ok with an extra 2GB of ram for ~£70 for 9.x

I think there are virtualization bundles available with the drive to nine program. With the Jump upgrade you can go straight to 9.1(2) from 7.1 and still use your existing sub at the remote site if that hardware supports 9.1.

Having looked at the BE6000 route it may be an expensive route for us at present.

Given our small user base I am thinking...

Current

7815 CUCx 7.1
7816 CUCM 7.1 ( PUB )
7816 CUCM 7.1 ( SUB ) ( on another physical site )

Move to

8.6

Move CUCx to virtual host on UCS C220 M3S then upgrade to 8.6 Move CUCM (Pub) to host on UCS C220 M3S then upgrade to 8.6 Upgrade CUCM (SUB) on present hardware.

Later.. ( to spread the cost )

Upgrade 2 servers on first UCS to 9.1
Purchase second UCS and move (SUB) to 9.1

Thoughts???

Going through it now Rob, I am moving from 8.5.1 to 8.6 and have the
mcs7835i3 that only has 4gm of mem...so I would need to update my pub and sub with 2gb mem each for total cost of 2500 bucks, they are shipped with 4gig and you need to enhance it with 2more gb. So i have decided to squeeze int in on a c220m3.
I am now downloading the ova template and install on vmware.
so i have to migrage physical to virtual, my 8.5.1 version was made bootable my TAC for me to download... now I have to upload iso/ova to datastore and import ova to create the server.
It's been alot of reading on this just to know my options... cause what bothers me is that the conversion is to take 4 or more hours per server...because the underlying linux os is being changed.
Good, luck.. I need it tooo.
