Not my decision, it's a third party software company that the customer uses for CRM, they are not going to change their platform for one customer :)

I'm not trying to sway your decision, but using tel: for hyperlinking phone numbers is no different than using mailto: to hyperlink email addresses.  Just one has been more common than the other.

If the developer uses one of the registered protocol handlers, then Jabber will click to call a sip: protocol URL like this example for an HTML page:
