the partition was originally intended to facilitate disaster recovery.
But as Erick mentioned storing backups on the local server is not good
practice. To get the best of both worlds - offserver backup and local
copy of backup for speedy recovery - i would configure BARS to backup
to the STI partition, then have a cron job copy that file off to
another server. You could even tie this in with a rotating backup
schedule so daily backups are stored locally and once a week the backup
is copied off to a network drive. Caveat being that daily backups
could potentially be lost, but you would have a backup from 1 week
ago. Having the backup file on the STI partition just makes it easy to
do disaster recovery - just point it to the local file and let the
local PCI bus do the rest.

The other option for the STI partition is to just repoint some of your
traces there. Just remember the partition must be present, in tact,
and roughly the same size if you ever do a server migration.
Otherwise, you will need to reconfigure trace settings after server
migration.
Anyone have access to one of the new 7825-H1 or-I1 servers with SATA
RAID built with 2000.4.1? I've heard the STI partition is removed on
those platforms.

Since the 2gig backup/sti partition was mentioned, are
there any plans on getting rid of this in future? I
only know of a handful of folks who use this to store
their backups and half of those I know about because
the backup started to fail because it became to big.
BARS gives you a big warning when you point backup to
local drives also.

I would disagree with this. I've used 9.1GB,
18.2GB, 36GB and 72GB disks in varying platforms,
and the OS installer never seemd to care, it
reserved 2Gig for the "backup" volume (mcs/sti
volume), and the rest for the OS.
Perhaps this was problematic with the earlier OS
installs, but since OS 2.4, I've never seen an
issue.

Publisher - Out of Disk Space
We asked about this, and the short answer was
no. The installation disks expect a certain disk
size according to the model of the server and that's
it.
Now, that doesn't mean you can't add disks into
the slots and use those as storage devices, but any
backup/restore process will ignore those disks. Will
the TAC ask you to remove those disks when
troubleshooting? Perhaps. The extra disks can be
used to store any installation files, logs, etc I
would presume.

Can you avoid the inevitable long-term problem
by replacing the hard
drive(s) with larger ones without confusing
the CCM installation disks?
