Correct we could use the port off of one of the call manager servers but we have a geography problem. Our Call Manager server are located in Milwaukee and Cleaveland. Where as our voicemail system is located in Milwaukee and also in Brazil.

So unfortionatly the only thing we can do is use the red headed stepchil and hope cisco does not end support for it or comes out with something to replace it wtih.
I agree, the VG248's do a fine job integrating the callmanager with
older voicemail systems that use SMDI integration.

However, you could also use the Cisco Message Interface service on the
CallManager for SMDI integration. You would then run the SMDI link
from the CallManager's serial port to your voicemail system. You
would still need a gateway of some sort but aleast you have options
other than VG248.

I have no problem with the VG248, it does a fine job - but it has
always seemed like the red headed stepchild. The newest code 1.3.1
doesn't even exist on the bug toolkit. I'm mentioned that to TAC
before - i think it is to encourage people to migrate to Unity. :)
