I'll confirm what Ed has stated and add some personal "insight" for what its worth. <div>ESW=Same version patches, upgrades and TAC support</div><div>UCSS=Major upgrades 6.x->7.x etc.</div><div>You must have an active ESW to maintain UCSS, actually when you order your upgrades via Cisco PUT (Product Upgrade Tool) you have to use your ESW contract (which is linked to your UCSS) to access the tool. </div>
<div>Last time i had to deal with expire UCSS for a client it was a nightmare..you basically have 2 options.</div><div>Retroactively pay for UCSS back to where it expired or pay the full upgrade price which in cases where upgrades are not available, (2+ versions) its a total rebuy of the product (at least for CUCM). There are promotions to get around this by migrating to CUWL but its still a total disaster to get it all worked out and our Cisco account team acts like your speaking a foreign language anytime the topic is brought up . Bottom line make sure you and your clients keep them both active or you'll regret it next time you go to upgrade.</div>

I think you have it backwards - ESW gives software support and minor<br>
patches, UCSS is the one that entitles major version upgrades (6 to 7<br>

etc. From my perspective (customer) it's ordered the same way we setup<br>

You must carry ESW on a product before you can register a UCSS<br>
subscription for it. I found this out the hard way. I believe there<br>
also be a penalty for not carrying UCSS for a period of time depending<br>
on versions you are running.<br>

people.. I could be way behind in that case and completely wrong :)<br>
