Microsoft is a bit cryptic with their explanation below. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:11.25pt;vertical-align:top'><em><span style='font-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";color:black'>Media bypass</span></em><span style='font-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";color:black'> has been added to Lync Server. Media bypass allows media traffic to bypass the Mediation Server and flow directly from the client (that is, Lync Server) to the gateway or IP-PBX. When media bypass is configured, the signaling traffic continues to flow through the Mediation Server on its path to the gateway; however, media traffic bypasses the Mediation Server and is sent directly to the gateway. Media bypass requires support from specific gateways. These gateways will be listed in the <a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=133622" target="_blank" id="ctl00_MTCS_main_ctl53_ctl00_ctl14_ctl00_ctl00">Microsoft Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:11.25pt;vertical-align:top'><span style='font-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";color:black'>With media bypass, the Mediation Server role can now be co-located on a front-end server, simplifying deployment and management of Lync Server. This reduction in physical servers helps lower the total cost of ownership. By removing the media workload from the Mediation Server, it can scale higher to support thousands of users.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><table class=MsoNormalTable border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width="100%" style='width:100.0%;background:white;border-collapse:collapse;border:none'><tr><td valign=top style='border:solid #333333 1.0pt;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>Cisco<o:p></o:p></span></p></td><td valign=top style='border:solid #333333 1.0pt;border-left:none;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>Cisco Unified Communications Manager<o:p></o:p></span></p></td><td valign=top style='border:solid #333333 1.0pt;border-left:none;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>Direct SIP<o:p></o:p></span></p></td><td valign=top style='border:solid #333333 1.0pt;border-left:none;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>UCM 4.2 2000-4-4a<o:p></o:p></span></p></td></tr><tr><td valign=top style='border:solid #333333 1.0pt;border-top:none;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'> <o:p></o:p></span></p></td><td colspan=3 valign=top style='border-top:none;border-left:none;border-bottom:solid #333333 1.0pt;border-right:solid #333333 1.0pt;padding:3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt 3.75pt'><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:9.0pt;line-height:130%'><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:130%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>Configuration Notes:<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;line-height:150%;mso-list:l1 level1 lfo1'><![if !supportLists]><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:150%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'><span style='mso-list:Ignore'>1.<span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span></span><![endif]><span style='font-size:9.5pt;line-height:150%;font-family:"Segoe UI","sans-serif";color:#333333'>On the Cisco IP-PBX, configure MTP to enabled and PRACK to disabled (the default for PRACK).
