<html><body bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><div>From my understanding as a vendor, you just need to buy a phone with part number contain 'spare' if you are on DLU based license or newer CCME which you need a separate license. Those part number with '=' will comes with paper license used for older 4.x environment however it is be very rare now. When we order direct from cisco, the '=' only part number isn't available anymore. So all customers who are still on 4.x are now 'excused' as the only option left is 'spare' to purchase the phone at cheaper price ('=' option is more ex as it comes with paper licnese) for them. <p>The spare naming seems to be just a legacy thing. Neither version is any different. The parts that still have licences are CP79XXG followed by a dash and some other abbreviation are only for CCME or 4.x installs. If you have 5.x or later you buy the parts
with out the appended characters or with equal signs and then buy DLUS or UCL users as appropriate.</p>

<div>DLU packs are purchased separately from phones now, they're not tied to any particular model. When you run out of DLUs, you buy more. The smallest DLU pack is 10, and the average phone takes 3 or 4, so you'll find yourself buying more DLUs. </div>

As far as I understand the "spare" part number, i.e. the one with the "=" at the end is purchasable without a license. The one without the equal sign must be purchased with a license. It's a software check that Cisco has. There is no difference in the products.
I'm guessing they've moved from using the equal sign to the spare keyword.<br>
