And that's definitely not true. You just need an appropriate module.
I have a Cisco WS-G5483= working in both Summit 5i, running
ExtremeWare 7.8.4 and (sic!) ancient Summit1 (non-'i') running very
old 4.1.21b1.
Works without any hassles in both of them. The only thing you'll
be notified using an old ExtremeWare is that the GBIC 'll be
detected as LX one (as quoting infothec: "these kind of GBIC were
not known as the SW development was finished"). In recent EW,
the module will be marked as 1000T one, as it should.

However, now EOL'ed WS-G5482 will not work in mentioned devices.
With Summit 5i, it 'll get force reboot after each plug-in of device.

P.S.: Don't forget, that you may need return config to factory defaults,
after unsuccessful experiments with non-working modules, otherwise
ports/GBICs in ports- may not work.
