  OK, this did not help unfortunately.

  Brent also suggested I try older software releases, which I really
should have thought of first.  I've now also tried booting the two
other firmware releases that I'm running successfully on our other
boxes.  Unfortunately, they still don't seem to work.

  Now tried: 7.3.00, 7.1.21, 7.1.17, 7.1.08 (ancient!)
