Hi. I have an AR-3 that needs caps replaced VERY badly. Some are
more than half gone. That's what you get when you store them for years at a
time I guess. That's the way it was when I got it in an auction.
Anyhow, I have a copy of the manual, but the parts list doesn't tell the
max voltage for the caps and no numbers at all for the variables. My
Bandspread cap is badly torn up and I wish to replace
the whole thing, but have no numbers.

Adam,
I built the AR-3 and its matching Q-multiplier as an eighth grader (story
and pic on my web page) As I recall, B+ did not exceed 250-275. Caps
rated at 400 or 600 give a fine safety margin. Many of the original caps
were ceramic and are fairly tough even when stored. What do you mean by
"half gone"?
The bandspread cap is simply in parallel with the two-section tuning cap
(no RF stage in the AR-3). Is it shorting? The plates are fairly well
separated. As long as it is functional, you can bend the plates back to
shape fairly easily. Is the phenolic insulator broken?
The AR-3 is a fun little receiver. Mine stills works well with the
original caps.
