Gee, maybe those transistors are a DC-DC converter for running
the DX-20 Mobile!  If there was a prize for "most bizarre mod",
this should be in the running, along with the Heath Twoer my
high school buddy had with a 4" Simpson  "S" meter mounted
on the front!  (It wiggled with audio on rx and emulated a #47
lamp on tx!)
