HW-16 side-tone question

    I have same problem on recently acquired HW-16.  Any resistance I
add across the neon  bulb extinguishes it giving me no sidetone, and
resistor to ground would drop bias voltage.  Only relief I've gotten so
far is to use resistor in lead of bulb to reduce frequency (pitch) to
about 300 hz so it doesn't blast my ear-pans.  I'm looking forward to
learning a solution to this one, too.
