It's really just too bad...

Folks,
I picked up a piece of Heath test gear at a local swap last weekend, and really
got to feeling bad after taking a look at the innards of this item. It's an IG-63
"Color Bar and Dot Generator", presumably made for alignment of color TV's. It's
a tube type instrument. I assume that it was made just about the time that solid
state was really beginning to make an impact in the consumer electronics industry,
and wholesale replacement of test gear was taking place. This piece is just pristine.
It's very clean, especially on the inside, but on the outside too. It was either
wired at the factory, or made by someone who had a lot of experience, 'cause it's
very well done. The wiring is neat, and the soldering is just top rate. Each and
every component is of the best quality. There are 12 tubes in this thing. 10 of them
are Mullard(Made in England or France) and the other 2 are RCA. Most of the caps are
either top quality mica's or ceramic. Some are good quality paper, but none of these
are waxed. All the other components are just as nice. The layout seems well thought
out and there is no crowding. A lot of good thought was given to shielding, etc.
It is just kind of sad that this really nice quality piece of gear was just relegated
to a hamfest to be sold as junk. I bought it for parts, and will eventually strip
it down to add to my junk box, but it seems a shame it never really got used for the
purpose it was intended to fulfill. Sorry for the space, I just had to ramble on about
this!
