HW-16 Question

I hear the oscillator tone when the VFO Function switch is in either the
Operate or Spot positions.  (I expected to just hear it in the Spot
position).  Of course when I tune to zero beat there's no tone.  So
obviously the VFO is free-running regardless of key up or down postion.
The difficulty with hearing the osc. in the Operate position is when you
tune the HW-16 off zero beat to tune in a station that is calling;  now you
hear the calling station, but also the osc tone.

I look at the VFO schematic and I see a strap within the VFO and also on
the VFO key jack.  Can anyone help me determine the correct configuration
of the strap and the key strap when using the HW-16 with a HG-10B VFO?
