It's a negative temperature coefficient resistor: high resistance when
cold, and low when hot.  Even if it looks like it's burnt up, it is likely
fine.  These have been used in table radios (Zenith especially) for a LONG
time.

You can get similar, disk-shaped, units today.  I just ordered some (from
RF Parts) to protect my R-390's from in-rush current.
