solid state tube replacement?

Hi, all
I seem to remember some solid state tube replacements for the
collins, and someone here was discussing some devices from heath for
vtvms a few weeks ago. I would like to know if anyone has done any
experimenting or analysis along these lines for any type of tube
replacement in anything. I dont wish to buy anything, but rather learn
how to design my own. I tried to find info via searches with search
engines, and surprisingly, didnt find much. If I remember right, the
collins "tubesters were for the most part a cascade of a fet and a
bipolar, but I dont recall any details of circuit topology, if I ever
saw any. The cascade seems to be a good way to go at first thought, but
times have changed, and I also wonder if there may be some fets now that
can be used alone. If anyone has any pointers or input on the subject, I
would appreciate it.
