I guess eventually this should go back to Heath, or someone will
complain, but hey, let's reminisce (did I spell that right?)...

W3GM in eastern Pennsylvania had a Henry 2K amplifier with a blown hv
transformer (that's his business why), so he outboarded a HUGE
transformer that was bigger than the base on the amplifier cabinet. He
put clay flower pots over the HV terminals to keep the cats and
operators feet away from the danger.

Instead of a zener diode in the cathode return for bias on the
3-500-Z's, he put an 866A with the required filament transformer in
there. The 866 mercury rectifier was mounted on a bracket and held
inside the open front cabinet with a carpenter's C-clamp. It provided a
15 V drop, pushing it closer to Class C, but it was nice to look at on
CW, with that huge purple CW visual beacon flashing inside the cabinet.

Contest wekend visitors understood that you watched with awe, and kept
your fingers OUT.

Other rumors abounded about him using fluorescent lamps as relative
output indicators in decades past...stick it inside the RF deck and tune
for maximum brightness....the good old days...
