Crystal Diode - what is it?

I have seen several of the older Heathkit products that use "Crystal
Diodes".  What exactly is this part and what is a viable replacement?
I thought maybe it was a regular Germanium diode such as a 1N34
but it doesn't seem to have the same characteristics.  Any ideas??
