Chassis Cleaning Process using a garden hose

Hi all,
    I cleaned a corroded battery well out of a cassette recorder using a
garden hose.  I protected the elctronics but the speaker I knew would get
wet.  I  worked quickly so the water wouldn't soak into the paper of the
speaker.  Immediately I took the cleaned recorder inside and used a hair
dryer on the speaker to get it dry right away.  That technique worked fine.
Afterwords I used a precision oiler to put a light coating of oil on the
corroded batter connections in the battery well.  Does anyone else have any
ideas on the common corrosion problem from batteries?  Any info appreciated.
