HW-100 Vs 101

Hi, all you Heathers,
I have never owned a HW-100, but have seen and used several over the years.
If we can beleive the 1969 Heath catalog in front of me now, which states,
"And the HW-100 is the only rig that uses a Field Effect Transistor (FET) in
the VFO for superior thermal stability." the HW-100 evidently used a
Junction field effect transistor, (JFET), as the VFO, which was then
followed by a 6AU6 tube as a buffer. Checking my schematic for the HW-101,
that is the same line-up as described in the 1969 catalog. In the '101, the
transistor is labled Q-941, and the 6AU6 is V-20, and I assume, those
probably are the same designations as in the '100. What I do recall, was
the hard time I always had trying to align the VFO, with those 2 trimmers,
buried down on the left side of the VFO, with no room to get a tuning stick
or screwdriver straight in to them. Oh, well, once you got'em right, they
sure did work. You are right about the pre-assembled VFOs in the SB-401,
like mine here now), has a tube type VFO. I believe the HW-100 was the
first Heath xmitter or xceiver to use a transistorized VFO. Maybe someone
else can supply more info. 73 es gud hamming, de
