Hi Don!

Maybe mercury batteries are indeed no longer available.
They're no longer in Radio Shack catalog (who prides
themselves on having batteries for anything!).

Years ago, Heathkit recommended an ordinary 1.5 volt
D-size battery to calibrate their VTVM. They claimed
a brand-new fresh cell actually put-out 1.55 volts
and had a calibration dot just above the 1.5 volt
scale.
