Which type 6146 ?

Several months ago I was faced with a similar dilemma and ask the same
question you are. From some 20 responses from the Heath and Collins
reflector, I learned the following:
1) The 6146B has 5 watts more plate dissipation, a controlled warmup
heater and has been especially designed for AB1 (linear) service.
2) The 6146 is a redesign of the 807 and primarily for Class C service.
3) The 6146A is an improvement over the 6146 but I don't remember what.
4) The 6146W is a ruggedized version of the original 6146 for mobile and
wartime service.
>From all this, I concluded that the B was the best choice but that the A
would work with no noticeable change in performance. Ws cost more and
are not as good (at least for a fixed station) and 'no letters' are not
sold anymore. I reported all this recently (maybe Nov or Dec) in the
Heath & Collins reflectors.
The same types and brands should be installed in both holes but I don't
believe matched pairs are necessary, although same date code would be
nice. Heath never matched them and they must have shipped 100,000 6146s
of various types for the DX100 to the HX1681.
I have a SB100 with 6146As and a SB101 with Bs and they seem to perform
identically.
