Blue Glow in 3-500z tube, SB-1000

Hi Folks-

I'm just in the process of making a Heath SB-1000 operational. It's working
quite well, but I have a question about the 3-500z transmitting tube. With
the key down, the plate glows orange, which I understand is normal. But with
the key down, the tube also glows blue in a halo around the plate.

I haven't seen this mentioned in the documentation, so I asked a friend what
he thought. His opinion was that the tube might have traces of gas in it and
that it would give "soft" performance, and that it should be replaced.

I sure would appreciate some second opinions, before I swap it out.

Please reply directly to "robcap at aol.com".

Thanks.

Rob, W3DX
