Murray and all,
The HW-2036 was never recalled, only the HW-2026, which had an unstable
transmitter mixer stage. Seems the IC chosen for the mixer did an
excellent job of NOT filtering spurs, harmonics, etc. The '2036 was a
good rig for a first attempt at incorporating "new technology" into a
Heath product, it just needed a bit more tweeking. The only interference
problem I was aware of was from other repeaters in the ham freqs. It was
possible that other services were affected, but I never heard about them,
only the ham repeater and 2M interference. And we did resort to
"bribery" to get some of the '2026's back; seems a few people really
loved kits, no matter if they worked properly or not.
The biggest mistake Heath made with that recall was packing boards into
"grab bags" and sending them to different stores. A few customers found
out which stores had which boards and bought sets to rebuild the radio.
We really discouraged them from that, in fact we (Tech consultants) were
told not to help anyone trying to rebuild one. Rumors had all the parts
going into a seawall in Lake Michigan; not true (unfortunately in this
case)!
