Well, the BFO control did cause the IF tube (6BA6?) to oscillate, and
hence, create a beat frequency. It was pretty touchy and not very good
for SSB/CW receiption. It would be a mistake to consider this a
"regenerative" receiver. It is clearly a superhet.

I still own my GR-81 (and I'm looking for parts) that I got for Christmas
1970. My older brother receive a GR-64 at the same time. Boy, did he ever
spend a lot of time on that radio!
Eventually, the GR-64 got sold to me, and I modified it to receive
ham-bands only just before I bought an HR-10B kit. I later used parts
from the GR-81 to restore the modifications of the GR-64 and sold it to a
friend.
At one point, I could just about trace out the schematic of the GR-64
from memory.
