Side Tone

Sean,

Yes, you're correct.... but turn down your monitor (Side
Tone) gain such that it's no longer "ear splitting." Next,
adjust your CW "Pitch Control" -- if your rig has one --
to get a nice ~ 700 Hz CW pitch. Sounds nice, eh? :-)
That's how us CW guys know what we sound like when we're
sending CW whilst wearing phones. It's very difficult to
tell what you're sending with an iambic key if you can't
listen to yourself in your headphones.

If you want to learn more about "Side Tone," QSK & CW
theory of operation... check out the "1998 ARRL HB" pgs
17.64 - 17.65. You can see the block diagram of 700 Hz
side tone generator, cool eh? :-) There's a biblio at the
end of that chapter if you want to drill deeper into the
theory of "Side Tone."

Catch you down the band,

73 - Conrad Weiss - NN6CW :-)

>>Forgive the moronic question.. I'm still in the
learning stage here.

Now, am I correct in assuming that the "Side Tone" is
that ear splitting tone (especially with headphones on)
that is generated by the radio when transmitting in CW?

Thanks everyone

Sean<<
