The best way to build an oscillator is to try build an amplifier :<)
Seriously, the hardest part about building a VFO is actually *not* the
electronics. It's the mechanical stuff. The mechanical gotcha's are stiffness
of the chassis, backlash in the drive, and thermal drift.
The HG10 VFO is a 4 sided box of fairly heavy guage metal. The top and bottom
sides of the box are flat heavy pieces metal. You want to be sure that the
mounting for the capacitor won't flex and the mounting for the inductor won't
transmit vibrations.
For the electronics, there are a lot of designs in just about any ARRL
Handbook. I suggest starting at 1.8 MHz and doubling. One option is to use an
IC instead of a transistor. The 8038 function generator will go to about 2 MHz
if I remember correctly. It will just require good filtering of the control
voltage and power supply to stay stable.
I'm guessing that you are having trouble finding an HG10 or similar at hamfests?

Hi, I am finding it harder and harder to find a VFO for my Dx-60. Have any
of you built a Vfo to use with your rigs. I am interested in something solid
state that will work with the dx60. thanks. Greg.
