Yes, that is it. But it doesn't have to be ear splitting. Most rigs have
and adjustment that allows you to set the level of the sidetone.

Sidetone is an absolute necessity when using any sort of electronic keyer
or a bug. You can't form good sounding CW without it. That's why many
keyers have it built-in. (It also allows you to practice using the keyer
without a transmitter)

Using a straight key or a sideswiper, you can probably produce CW on
rythym alone. But it is easier with sidetone.
