Reminds me of something that happened at work last week at work. A poor
design in a test fixture led to about 70A being forced through a 1A
diode. It was several seconds before enough smoke escaped for someone to
notice what was happening and shut off the power supply. By that time,
the PC board was charred through for about a half inch around the diode.
There was enough heat to melt and char near by components, melt the
solder joints on those components, and damage a wire harness running
under the board.
Like you said, "Ahh the smell of burning electronics..." By the way, I
think next time they'll be sure to add a fuse.
