Hi John.
It is funny that you should ask this question now, because I am
auctioning of some Mullard 12AT7WA tubes on ebay now(just type in
Mullard or 12AT7WA in the search field to find it).
The difference has to do with small variations in construction
techniques. As tubes were changed in internal construction, without
changing the basic electrical nature of the tube type, a new
nomenclature was assigned to them. Hence, the 6L6 family consists of the
original 6L6 followed by the 6L6GA, 6L6GB, and 6L6GC.
Essentially, the tubes can be used interchangeably without too much of a
problem. In general, the latter versions were the best(the new and
improved!).
