manual wanted

What you are doing is rationalizing your own theft of someone else's property.

The right to copy ("Copyright") did not come free. Tens of thousands of dollars, sometimes hundreds of thousands, were invested in the development of every Heathkit manual. Most of them took 3 to six months to write, some even longer. The drawings had to be drawn, the text had to be written, and the whole thing had to be typeset and proofred [and proofbuilt also].

The fact that it is physically possible for you to steal a manual by making an illegal photocopy without detection by the victim does not make it either any less wrong or any less illegal.

At some level all of us may have done this on occasion, in part because many of the companies who made older equipment do not currently exist [tried to get an IMSAI or Processor Technology manual lately]. And a page or two, in any case, is probably permitted as "fair use" [but not if sold]. But Heath is still in business, clearly objects to "field duplication" and has every right to enforce their copyrights.

As for anyone doing this on a large scale, and in particular anyone who is selling the manuals, I personally hope that they are prosecuted.

Something which anyone stupid enough to post about committing a felony on the internet clearly deserves. May your own E-Mails be used against you in court.
