SB-101 Tuning Mechanism

I have an odd question....

I have a really nice SB-101 -- however, I need to push in the tuning knob
to tune the VFO.  Without pushing in on the main tuning knob, the knob just
spins.

 Seems to me this is not normal.  Can anyone on the list tell me how their
SB-101 main tuning works?
