IM-5228 VTVM Troubleshooting

I have a Heathkit IM-5228 VTVM.  Is the schematic the same as the IM-11?  I
have the IM-11 schematic and it seems to be so, however, this unit does not
work.  It was originally very poorly constructed, so I am tracing the
circuit for errors, but don't have the nice construction manual.  When
turned on to AC, the meter pins to the left hard.  When switched to the DC-
, DC+, or OHMS, it pins to the right hard. Any suggestions as to the cause?
Anyone have scans of the manual (or pertinent parts) that you are willing to
send by email?
