Dale,
It sounds like it might be the same problem I had with an IM-7 or 8.
(faulty memory)  It came down to a loose 12AX7 socket, (again faulty
memory, but the tube that does the work)  replacement sockets were
available through this list but it was a %$#@ to replace.  Troubleshoot by
moving the tube slightly and trying the unit out.  Bending the tube socket
contacts slightly with a dental pick was the easy fix.  Good luck.
