If it worked at your friend's house, on his computer and it doesn't work on
your computer at your house that kind of points in the direction of your
computer. Did you use the same cable in both instances? It should be simple
enough to check that pins 2, 3, and 7 are connected straight through if a 25
pin serial connector is used. On a 9 pin connector thaat would be pins 2, 3,
and 5. Is the software you're using setting the TNC in the transparent mode?
In my narrow-minded way, I think most of those TNC specific programs are a
lot of trouble for what they're supposed to do. Personally, I use good old
Procomm Plus with all my TNC's. In many instances, I've actually had to
reset the TNC by pulling the battery-backed jumper and start again. Another
good one was PaKet. This was a DOS mode program which did everything I
needed to do but was simple enough to set up and operate. My HF TNC is AEA
PK-232 and VHF TNC is PK-88.

Subject: HK-232 TNC troubles
I recently bought a Heathkit HK-232, which is supposedly identical to the
AEA PK-232. The past couple of days I've been trying to hook it up to the
computer in my shack with no luck. The computer simply doesn't want to talk
to the TNC. I tried it at the house of a friend who has the AEA model and it
worked just fine, but when I got it home, the software I'm using (PkGOLD
TestDrive) just kept saying it couldn't find the TNC. So I tried everything
I could think of. I tried switching the software to a simple RTTY program I
downloaded from qrz.com with no luck... I tried attaching the TNC to the
printer port and the serial port, neither of which worked... I even tried
dragging this computer I'm using now into the shack, but still no result.
I'm completely out of ideas, so does anyone have any thought on what I
should try next?

Jay, KF6RMG
