Try this. Take a vacuum cleaner and an old pair of your XYLs panty hose
(or if your really comfortable with your masculinity, go buy a pair) and
put the panty hose over the end of the nozzle and hold them tight. Turn
on the vacuum and put the nozzle as close as possible to where you dropped
the shim and hopefully it will be vacuumed out and the nylon will hold it
from going up the hose. I have also duct taped smaller diameter clear
hose into the nozzle to get into small places. Stuff like Tygon Tubing
works well, available at auto parts stores. Good Luck and don't forget to
sneak the panty hose back into the dresser drawer.
