HW-12 Receive Audio troubles

Hi, Greenies,

I've got a HW-12A which I've cleaned up, and runs pretty well. EXCEPT,
the receive audio is somewhat distorted and not very nice to listen to.
My SB-series gear sounds like hi-fi in comparison! The transmit audio is
just fine and I get great signal reports. Also, the S-meter is not
always on the mark. Sometimes, it works FB; other times, it hardly gets
off zero with loud signals. Either cold start or warmed up, doesn't seem
to matter. I suspect somewhere in the AVC line, there's a problem, but
where's a good place to start?

73,
