If this hasn't been beaten into the ground yet...
My lookups led to the discovery that the 6146 and 6146A had lower plate
dissipation than the 6146B. Among the variations, I also noted there were
differences in filament current (1/8 A difference) and interelectrode
capacitances. This may explain why neutralization isn't the same between
different tubes, and why not all vintages are usable in all rigs (range of
adjustment of neutralization method?).
I cannot recall if it was word of mouth or seeing it in print, but I was
surprised to hear the the 6146W is actually a ruggedized A, not B, so it has
the lower Pd on the anode.
I had always heard that the 8298A was the commercial equivalent of the
6146B. I never understood the 6146 to be a consumer/entertainment item, so
maybe it's industrial vs. commercial? I have some 8298's (Motorola), and was
curious where they fell in the scheme of equivalence (A or B?). A tube
dealer told me the 8298 family were all based on the 6146B specs, not A,
regardless of suffix on the 8298.
