Great Post Dave
I have worked on old tube audio gear for years. I always form caps. When I
replace old high voltage electrolytic caps with surplus caps. That have been
around for years. When a power supply cap blow up it is not a nice sight and a
pain to clean up.
I'm repairing a audio amp that has 216, 000 mf. in the power supply @ 75 volts .
You use a varaic on power up. When it comes to power supply caps. I look the the
signature with a huntron. Today caps are cheep. High voltage caps or High value
high voltage caps I always check first.
