SB-401 SSB Problem

Thanks to all for their input re my problem with an SB-401 which had full
power on CW but very little power on SSB (USB or LSB). I should have
indicated that I knew the microphone was OK because it checked out fine
with another SB-401.

The USB and LSB crystals were suspect but got no joy when I substituted
crystals from the good rig.

This afternoon, I measured dc and ac voltages at the input/output of each
stage on the good rig and started to do the same when I found the problem.
The mic level pot had been broken by a previous owner. Although I do not
have an SB-401 parts rig, I used the same control from an SB-400 rig to
jury rig the fix and confirm the solution. It works fine but of course I
have the hanging control and want to replace the part.

If someone has an SB-401 parts rig and would like to sell me the level
control (has a switch and two pots mechanically integrated), I would be
interested in buying the control.

Thanks again. It was an interesting problem.

Paul
