SB-614 as receiver monitor

Greetings,
        I would appreciate feedback from any of you that have used the SB-614
to monitor received signals.  Have you simply taken audio output from the
receiver at the speaker output?  What results have you had and with what
receivers?  Are you able to get Xmas tree patterns from clean SSB signals in
spite of noise level, etc.?  Is it even practical to use it for this purposel?
