SB4XX alignment questions

Getting ready to align an SB400, without the VTVM.

Anyone ever use a digital voltmeter with success? I used one on my SB303
and it seemed to work fine, or that was my impression.

How about constructing an RF probe for use with a digital VOM? Looked in
the handbook which outlines a 1N34 diode, .01 cap and a 4.5 meg
resistor. The old grey cells only recall using a diode for rf probe on
Motorola tube equipment.

I know, I know, ideally I need a VTVM. Every time I bid on one at eBay
(yuccch) someone comes along and runs the price up behind me. Anyone got
an IM-28 bench top unit relatively cheap?

thanks guys...
