how to clean knobs

Guys I am in the process of bringing back to life an Heathkit TX-1 and an
RX-1, they are both in need a some cleaning, but luck for me they both will
clean up and be 9+ after words. No holes or mods, all original.

These have the aluminum knobs on them and they seem to have been coated
with varnish or something. Most if it is worn off. What is the best way to
restore these so they look new.
