Microphones doesn't have to be tubes, a slight mechanical movement causes
capacitive and inductance changes (usually the former). There are commercial
microphones that take advantage of of capacitive changes to detect audio.

My first FM signal was generated my attaching a speaker to a VFO and making
the plates of the tuning cap shift the frequency.
