dial cord ?

I am amazed by the ENGINEERS (EE's, in most cases) who do not know what either a vacuum tube or a slide rule is.

But then, they are still trying to figure out why you "dial" a telephone.

And they are clueless when they hear someone say that something "sounds like a broken record".

My wife is a teacher and was taking a group of kids on a tour of an old mansion where they came across an Edison Phonograph. In answer to "what is that", the response was "it's what people used to listen to music before record players". Which provoked "What is a record player ?".

There were a whole bunch of these in the Wall Street Journal a month or so ago, culled from an internet list.

We live in world where change is fast, and the rate of change is continuing to increase.
