The RS-232 port was a separate product, about $40 as I recall, and was an option that could be added to any GC-1000.  As far as I know, none of the kit GC-1000's came with the RS-232 accessory as an integral item [even if you ordered them together, they came as separate items in separate boxes]. I am not sure about the assembled units, they may have been available with the RS-232 accessory factory built, or it might even have been standard in factory assembled models.

The parts for the RS-232 option mounted on what was otherwise an unpopulated area of the tone decoder board.  As such, the option could be added to any clock, even today, if you could get the parts.  And, as far as I know, only the microprocessor would be difficult to get.  The microprocessor, as was discussed last week, is the same one as the "main" microprocessor, and may even still be available from Heath.  If not, there was an offer to sell some equivalent parts [the external EPROM versions] just last week on this board.

I built a GC-1000 from a kit and later added the RS-232 accessory.  I still have the clock [working], and both manuals.  I have never actually used the RS-232 accessory and removed the IC's to hold down heat generation.  Heat kills GC-1000's, the power supply was very poorly designed and will literally turn the circuit board material black.  I have removed the power transformer and much of the rest of the power supply from my unit and run it off of a 12 volt "wall wart" transformer.
