Fwd: Lead-free solder

I replied off list before, but then thought the list may be
interested.  Some of that "silver bearing" solder has a relative low
melting temperature, comparable to lead-tin solder.  BUT, and this can
be a very big "BUT", they can have a radically different "re-melt"
temperature.  One alloy sold to gunsmiths for mounting gunsights melts
at something like 475-500 deg. F, but the remelt temp is around 1100
deg. F.  A friend found that he could not unsolder a PL259 plug after
he had forgotten to put the sleeve on first and had used that low temp
5% silver solder.  2 mistakes, forgetting the sleeve, and using silver
bearing solder.
