Rocket Radio - first impression

The original RR had a crystal earpiece, perhaps this one has been supplied
with a low z dynamic earpiece. I think AES has the crystal earpieces for a
few bux, it might save the day if the present RR are a dud. There isn't
much in one of these things other than a loops stick and a germanium diode.
Also check and see if they used some lousy silican switching diode instead
of a germanium type... don't know if that will affect sensitivity, but there
is not much else to go wrong with the RR. I had one in the middle 1950s
and with a short 5 foot pigtail antenna I could pick up both the local
peanun whistle broadcast stations in my home town, Eureka California, with
good volume. I don't think either station ran more than 5 Kw and perhaps
less. One was KIEM at the top of the band and the second one was KHUM and
the lower end of the band. I ordered a trio of the Restoration Hardware RR
for my grandkids and with one for myself. I'll let you know how they work
out for me and the kids.
