Unbuilt Heath's

I don't think Brian is "full of it"
I agree with him that kit building today is a step down from years past.
The Elecraft 'looks' like a kit, and I believe it is somewhat low power.
I was interested in TenTec's 2Mfm transceiver kit, but looking at it at
Dayton, it felt kind of cheap. The rest of TenTec's kit line reminds me of
MFJ.
Heath may have been in business because most hams couldn't afford Collins,
Drake, Swan, but they were successful because many of there kits WERE
competitive. The SB102 was not as solid as a KWM2A, but it was close, and
had a CW filter. It certainly held its' own against the Swan lineup. And the
SB303 receiver has a lot of things over a 75A4 (which hardly outperforms 95
% of todays gear)
In addition, while you can try your kitbuilding skills with today's QRP
rigs, and regenerative receivers, and transverters, gone are the quality 1
and 2 kw amps, legal limit antenna tuners, monitor scopes, keyers etc.
Combine that with the whole lineup of hifi kits, and I do understand what
Brian sees as missing.
